Turquoise Bay Resort Roatan host NABS Event for Third Straight Year

The National Association of Black Scuba Divers Youth Educational Summit (NABS/YES), was held in Roatan, Honduras June  30 – Jul 7, 2018.

This was the third consecutive NABS/YES held at Turquoise Bay Dive and Beach Resort and once again the resort staff and dive staff at Subway Watersports proved themselves to be excellent hosts.

This years’ theme “Advocates for Our Ocean” was realized by bringing together youth ranging in ages 14-18 and adults from the United States, Belize and Honduras for a week  long journey of discovery and exciting learning opportunities in marine and environmental sciences. NABS/YES youth divers and snorkelers completed a Reef Fish ID course and conducted surveys.  All participants did an outstanding job on daily fish ID surveys.  An Underwater Photography class was offered resulting in beautiful photos.  Continuing diver education courses were offered in Navigation, Peak & Buoyancy and Deep Dive as well as training in appropriate use of the lift bag.

We dove our beautiful NABS Reef and performed maintenance on the geocache site designed, painted and placed at NABS Reef in 2016 by the NABS/YES team.  Our community service activities consisted of two Project AWARE Dive Against Debris beach and underwater cleanups at Luna Beach Walk and El Berrinche Mangroves in conjunction with the Roatan Marine Park.  An ongoing project during the week designed to incorporate math, science, and engineering by way of marine technology was the building of Remotely Operated Vehicles.

By the end of the week NABS/YES participants completed two ROV’s and successfully launched them underwater.  On the final day of NABS/YES a Freediving class was lead by staff from the Roatan Freediving School & Training Center. NABS/YES youth were taught the basics of freediving and rescue maneuvers. The 2018 NABS/YES was a GREAT success!!  A BIG NABS/YES thanks goes out to all who helped and supported our program.

We are especially grateful to Turquoise Bay and Subway Watersports for their continuing support and hospitality, to our chaperones, and to our new partners from Belize, Adolfo Ayuso, Senior Dive Instructor at Ramon’s Village Resort, and Everette Anderson, Chairman of the San Pedro Island Tour Operators Association, for bringing their youth.  This year NABS/YES was truly an international affair!
