SEAKERs organization, led by PSI-PCI Instructor Dr. Shannon McAteer, is on a mission. Thru faith-based outreach they are working to help kids learn to dive that would probably never have the opportunity. They are using SCUBA to help reach out to at risk youth to give them an opportunity to succeed, not just in SCUBA, but in life.
With support from PSI-PCI, NAUI, Open Water Adventures in Charlotte, the West Cabarrus YMCA, and the support of individuals, Shannon has put together an outreach program that motivates kids to reach above obstacles and apply themselves. To gain a different perspective on the world they live in by gaining a perspective on the underwater world.
“SEAKERS Aquatic Adventures is dedicated to offering the gift of diving to those who otherwise may never be able to experience God’s underwater kingdom”, says Shannon. Through the program these kids gain valuable education and technical training to help them be successful in a variety of work in the SCUBA industry. One participant, Mathew Machin, after successful completion of the diving program and PSI-PCI training, was able to secure an intern position with Open Water Adventures. Mathew said, “I could never thank the people at SEAKERS enough for the opportunities they’ve given me and are still giving me. But, I know I can and will learn everything I can, so I can repay them and become a valuable asset to their organization. It’s a long road to get to where I want to be, but I now know, thanks to SEAKERS, that I’ll get there for sure.”
Joe Gaydeski from Open Water Adventures agrees, “Mathew has been a pleasure to have at Open Water Adventures. His SEAKERS sponsored internship at our Scuba Center has been valuable to everyone involved. Mathew’s cylinder inspection training that was sponsored by PSI-PCI was a huge contributing factor. In addition, his personality and enthusiasm for SCUBA has been a big plus”.
Mark Gresham, President of PSI-PCI, Inc. says, “We are proud to be able to provide PSI-PCI training scholarships through SEAKERS. We believe this will give these participants a great advantage in the dive industry.”
