Stop by booth 1620 and join DiveNewsWire in celebrating the History of Diving Museum’s 10 year anniversary of the Immerse Yourself series. Since 2005 on the third Wednesday of every month, HDM has offered a free presentation to the public. In the beginning, founders Dr. Joe and Dr. Sally Bauer hosted a talk showcasing each exhibit as it was built and completed.
“Even with Hurricane Wilma approaching, we were joined by local dive enthusiast in kicking off the first presentation on October 19, 2005. Wilma hit southwest Florida just five days later” recalled Dr. Sally Bauer. After the stormy start, monthly programing continued until all exhibits were done. The Bauer’s then branched out inviting a variety of historians and educational outreach ambassadors to cover topics relating to “man’s quest to explore under the sea”.
Diving icons from the International Diving Hall of Fame, Commercial Diving Hall of Fame, and Women’s Diving Hall of Fame as well as numerous published authors, artists, environmental award winners and university educators have shared their knowledge and experiences with thousands over the 10 years. Hosted in the beautiful Bauer Diving Research Library, the setting alone brings an awe inspiring experience sitting among books and journals that date back to the 1500’s. The Museum also has overflow capacity in the newly created Changing Exhibit Room.
The History of Diving Museum is a must see for anyone traveling to the Florida Keys. Divers and non-divers alike are astonished by over 4,000 years of history. We are open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm.
