Coral Restoration Foundation Bonaire (CRF Bonaire) hosted Coralpalooza in Bonaire for the third year in a row as part of the international event originating in Key Largo, Florida. Over 110 divers and four dive operators gathered together to celebrate World Oceans Day this past weekend.
Coralpalooza, an international event to celebrate World Oceans Day, raises awareness for the restoration and conservation of coral reef ecosystems around the world. The event on Bonaire gives divers a chance to learn more about how they can protect our underwater world while making a lasting impact on Bonaire’s coral reefs.
With the support of four local dive operators – Buddy Dive Resort, Gooodive Bonaire, Harbour Village Beach Club, and Wannadive Bonaire – CRF Bonaire gathered over 110 divers together to dive in six different coral nurseries around Bonaire. Volunteers included divers as young as ten years old, many of the STINAPA Jr. Rangers, tourists from countries around the world, Ned and Anna DeLoach of Reef Environmental Education Foundation, and the dive community of Bonaire.
Volunteer divers helped propagate corals in the nurseries, perform routine maintenance to nursery structures, and monitor previously transplanted corals all alongside experienced coral restoration team leaders.
The island’s Lieutenant Governor, Edison Rijna, and representatives from the Bonaire National Marine Park also lent their support to Coralpalooza this year. CRF Bonaire Board Member Augusto Montbrun was inspired by the group on Saturday, “It is encouraging to see the community of Bonaire coming together to get involved in restoring our coral reefs. Every single person on the island can make a difference for our reefs, and today, more than a hundred did.”
Coralpalooza, a free event designed to allow those who normally would not be able to participate in coral restoration work a chance to do so, would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsoring dive shops and our sponsors Cargill, World Wildlife Fund – Netherlands, and Administratiekantoor Brandaris.
